Greenleaf Classics Pet Books
This site's goal is to document every book published by Greenleaf Classics during their years of publishing from 1959 to 1990.As the site opens, information about books from the Vintage period of 1959 through 1975 are cataloged and ready forviewing. The rest of the books will be cataloged soon.
The Greenleaf Publishing company started in 1959 and experienced fast growth and tough challenges as they published sex novels through the 60's. This was a time of massive change in the culture's attitudes toward sexual expression. This explained the many legal fights to successfully defend First Amendment rights to publish such books, and the approach to sell the books by putting striking cover art on them.
The packaging of the books in the Vintage period had strong cover art and exotic titles that promised much morethan they delivered. They make for an entertaining and visually appealing digital archive.
By 1976, the original management team was gone and the books changed their character. The pool of writers changed. The staff of cover artists changed. The editorial team thatset story policy changed. Earlier imprints were halted and new imprints started. Thus the distinction being made here between the vintage and modern periods in the archive.
The books from the Modern period cover a wide spectrum of specific fetish themesfeatured in the various imprints. The cover art is either colorful and strikingor simple line drawings illustrating a narrative scene.

The Dilithium Press Children's Classics series, published between 1986 and 1995, is one of our favorite series to recommend to those building a home library. Though now long out of print, these beautiful, unabridged* books remain fairly easy to acquire and relatively affordable, often priced in the $6-20 range. But it is nearly impossible to find solid information about the series, so we're seeking to rectify that!
First things first. What are these? These were published as value hardcovers, and competed with such series as Illustrated Junior Library, Scribners Classics and the Books of Wonder series of that time. An equivalent series today would be the Sterling Classics or the Puffin hardcovers, though we think these are a little nicer. At 55 books (that we know of), this is nearly the largest collection of those mentioned (BoW has 67), and feature illustrations throughout the series by such famous artists as Jessie Willcox Smith, Louis Rhead, Milo Winter, Charles Santore, Troy Howell (of Redwall fame), Howard Pyle and even N.C. Wyeth! Illustrated throughout the books in black and white, each title also features lovely, classic, full-color plates placed sporadically (usually 8-12 pictures). The books offer quality binding with large print and huge margins on acid-free paper. These will typically hold up quite well. (We do want to note, however, that the deckled pages and interspersed plates are a frustration for some folks.)
There are two sizes of the books, and on our site, we list the larger of the two, which measure 9.5"h x 8"w (we'll offer more information comparing the two below). On the copyright pages, these are consistently listed as being published by Children's Classics, a division of Dilithium Press, Ltd., but we've seen them listed in online search engines under a lot of different publishers, and find that searching for "children's classics" doesn't help narrow down editions when tracking these down! While we've found these books typically easy to obtain, many are difficult to find. Our listings below offer the ISBNs, which are EXTREMELY helpful in tracking down the right books!
Two other publishers--Longmeadow Press and Portland House--have published a few of these same books in different covers. We consider the Portland House Illustrated Classics to be a "sister" series, which has the same editor and a couple of duplicate titles, but with more beautiful bindings and additional, more mature-themed titles.

As a writer myself, I know that every character in my books is me. Bach knows this, too. But do we really learn from the collection of stuff we hold inside, stuff that is our history? The book begins when Bach is confronted by Dickie, his child-self. The boy asks for one thing: He wants his adult self to sign off on the meaning of life contained in his eight-year-old vision of maturity. Bach is appalled at his simple naiveté. What should you tell your younger self?
